It is SO hard for me to believe my "little" (I say that with a chuckle) guy turned 6 months old this past Wednesday. Today we had his well baby visit to see how he is doing. Well, as if we didn't know already, he is a BIG kid! I was surprised the doctor didn't get after me about how big he is, but she said that his weight & height are staying right on the curve he was already on. So it wasn't a big deal that he weighed in at 23 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 29 inches (Drew was exactly an inch shorter at 6 months & exactly 5 pounds lighter -- Drew was 29 inches and 9 months and 23 pounds 7 ounces at one year!! LOL). She said he is a just a BIG kid! LOL He is right on schedule with all the developmental milestones, but a little behind with teething (which she told me again -- had told us with Drew too -- that larger kids are often later getting their teeth. She said their body is too busy sending all the nutrition to their gorwing body.) She was really impressed with how social he is - making great eye contact and then trying to "talk" to her. (looks like I have another talker - lol)
So now we begin feeding him foods. I thought it was interesting that she said not to focus too much on the cereals. Just pick on to start with - try it 3-4 days to find the consistancy he does best with and then move on to yellow/orange veggies. And then she said she would probably start him on Level 2 foods - that the Level 1 food are more for those infants that start eatting foods around 4 months. Yes, our doctor is one that starts babies later on eating. She really stressed at the 4 month visit for us to wait until 6 months because of possible allergies too - since Zach already has eczema which increases the likelyhood of him being allergic to foods.
Last night we though Zach was going to get up on his knees...he sure kept trying to do it. Bet it won't be too long until he gets it. It was funny because he was trying to get up on his hands and knees to get to a toy, but all he was doing was scooting backward with each try - farther away from the toy. He was NOT a happy camper about that.
I am anxious to see if he picks up crawling more easily than Drew did. We were thinking Drew might skip crawling since he was pulling him up to stand and cruise around the furniture (at about 8 months) before he crawled. And then his crawl started off as a push-up and then flopping forward on his tummy. It was pretty funny to watch. Drew actually took some of his first steps without holding on to anything when he was a little over 9 months...and had only learned to crawl the normal way a couple of weeks before!
I realized the other day that it is time to start the baby sign language with Zach now. We started Drew with it at 6 months, and he just laughed at us everything we tried to teach him the sign for "more". Since it seemed to not be making it through to him, we stopped after only a couple of weeks. Then, out of the blue a few couple of months later, he signed "more" all by himself. It was crazy! And after that he picked up other signs (drink, please, thank you, etc) pretty quick. Of course, it is also the reason he was late at talking (didn't really start talking until after he was 2). But when he did finally talk, he went straight to using simple sentences rather than just a word or 2. And there has been no stopping the gabbering ever since - lol. Now we can't get him to be quiet...the kid even talks in his sleep!
So I would say the signing didn't hurt him at all. Some say that signing with babies increased their IQ and stuff like that. Which is all great...but I honestly started it so Drew could communicate what he wanted before he could talk. I think it did help cut down that sort of frustration for him since he had a way to let us know what he wanted/needed. Hope it works as well with Zach.
Ok, I need to go get some lunch for Drew and then get him down for his nap...hopefully while Zach continues to sleep
I'm thinking I might even try and catch a few winks if they both are sleeping. Drew & I have some sort of cold right now. No fever, just runny nose, little cough and just sort of feeling blah. NOT a good time for that to happen! I need to get some painting done this weekend!!! Hope everyone has a great weekend!
**Looks like I will have to wait a little longer to be an aunt...*sigh* My sister-in-law (my brother's wife), was suppose to go in and be given something to help start labor at 7pm last night. When they got there, she was already in labor so they couldn't use what they thought. So they waited until about 4am this morning to induce. I guess they are telling them it will probably be after 7pm tonight. My brother did say the contractions are coming pretty strong and hard though...so maybe it will be sooner. For her sack I hope it does!! *sending prayers for a safe and speedy delivery for them*
